High Protein Coffee Tiramisu | 5-Minute Pre or Post-Workout Snack

There are some things Italians probably shouldn't see us mess with.

Tiramisu might be one of them.

But this is a little different.

This is a ridiculously simple high protein coffee tiramisu-style snack I actually make myself around training. Four basic ingredients, about five minutes of prep, no baking, and it gives you that coffee-and-cream tiramisu hit without needing to make an entire dessert.

It's become one of my go-to options when I want something sweet before or after training but don't feel like another protein shake or boring bowl of yoghurt.

Ladyfingers. Greek yoghurt. A proper shot of strong coffee. A little honey.

That's basically it.

And considering we made an entire Savage tee around the Italian pre-workout ritual of coffee, this recipe feels pretty appropriate.

My 5-Minute High Protein Coffee Tiramisu

Traditional tiramisu is incredible.

It's also not exactly something I'm making at 3:30 in the afternoon before heading to the gym.

This version takes the basic flavour combination that makes tiramisu so good, strong coffee, creamy filling, sweetness and soft ladyfingers, and strips it right back.

The result sits somewhere between a high-protein snack and dessert.

And unlike some "healthy desserts" that technically fit your macros but taste nothing like the thing they're replacing, this still has real ladyfingers and real coffee.

That's important.

We're making a lighter, gym-friendly tiramisu-style dessert. We're not trying to convince ourselves that lettuce tastes like mascarpone.

High Protein Coffee Tiramisu Ingredients

For one serve you'll need:

  • 3–4 ladyfingers (savoiardi)
  • 150g Greek yoghurt, ideally a thick, high-protein variety
  • 1 shot of strong espresso or coffee
  • Honey to taste, start with around 1 teaspoon
  • Optional: Unflavoured collagen protein powder
  • Optional: Unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting

Optional Higher-Protein Addition

If you want to increase the protein content without changing the coffee flavour too much, mix some unflavoured protein into the Greek yoghurt.

The Chief Grass Fed Collagen Protein Powder available at Savage is unflavoured, which makes it easy to mix through yoghurt without turning the recipe into vanilla, chocolate or something completely different.

No mascarpone. No cream. No baking. No 17-ingredient "healthy" recipe.

How to Make High Protein Coffee Tiramisu

Step 1: Make Your Coffee

Pull one strong espresso shot and let it cool slightly.

I like the coffee strong because you're only using a small amount and you want that flavour to actually come through.

If you don't have an espresso machine, strong brewed or instant coffee works too.

Step 2: Make the Yoghurt Layer

Add 150g of Greek yoghurt to a bowl.

Mix through a small amount of honey and taste it.

You don't need much. The ladyfingers already bring some sweetness, so you're just taking the edge off the Greek yoghurt rather than turning it into icing.

If you're making the higher-protein version, mix your unflavoured collagen protein through the yoghurt at this point.

Step 3: Dip the Ladyfingers

Pour your coffee into a shallow bowl or plate.

Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee.

And I mean quickly.

Savoiardi absorb liquid fast. Leave them sitting in there and you'll end up with coffee-flavoured mush.

A quick dip on each side is enough.

Step 4: Layer It Up

Put a coffee-soaked ladyfinger down, add some of the yoghurt mixture, then repeat.

Depending on the container you're using, you can stack the layers or lay the ladyfingers next to each other and spread the yoghurt over the top.

There are no presentation awards here.

Step 5: Finish It

Dust the top with cocoa powder if you want the full tiramisu look.

You can eat it immediately, but I think it's better after sitting in the fridge for around 10–20 minutes.

The ladyfingers soften, the coffee works through them and everything comes together properly.

High Protein Coffee Tiramisu Calories and Macros

The exact macros will vary depending on the brand and quantity of ladyfingers, Greek yoghurt and honey you use, so treat these as an estimate rather than an exact nutrition label.

For a typical serve using four ladyfingers, 150g high-protein Greek yoghurt and around one teaspoon of honey:

Nutrition Approximate Amount
Calories 250–300 kcal
Protein 17–20g
Carbohydrates 35–45g
Fat 3–6g

The espresso itself contributes very few calories.

If you add collagen protein, your calories and protein will increase based on the serving size and product you use.

If you track your macros closely, calculate the recipe using the nutrition panels from your specific yoghurt, ladyfingers, honey and protein powder.

How to Make Coffee Tiramisu Higher in Protein

The easiest option is choosing a high-protein Greek yoghurt.

That gets the base recipe into a decent protein range without fundamentally changing what you're eating.

If you want to push it higher, mix Chief Grass Fed Collagen Protein through the yoghurt.

This is one of the reasons I prefer unflavoured protein for recipes like this.

You still want it to taste like coffee tiramisu.

A strongly flavoured protein powder can completely take over the recipe.

It's also worth remembering that collagen and whey aren't nutritionally identical proteins. Think about this snack as one part of your overall daily protein intake rather than trying to turn every dessert into a 50g protein meal.

Is Coffee Tiramisu Good Before a Workout?

It can work well as a simple pre-workout snack because the ladyfingers and honey provide carbohydrates, while the Greek yoghurt contributes protein.

It's also relatively light compared with eating a full meal before training.

That's useful if you're someone who doesn't enjoy training with a huge meal sitting in your stomach.

The coffee is obviously part of the appeal too, although your tolerance to caffeine and preferred timing are individual.

I'd have it far enough before training that it feels comfortable for you rather than worrying about a supposedly perfect pre-workout window.

Is Coffee Tiramisu Good After a Workout?

It works post-workout too.

You get carbohydrates from the ladyfingers and honey plus protein from the Greek yoghurt, all in something that actually feels like dessert.

If I'm making it specifically after training and want more protein, that's when I'd be more likely to add the unflavoured collagen or eat it alongside another protein source.

Your overall daily nutrition matters more than obsessing over a tiny post-workout window.

If you're consistently hitting your calorie and protein targets across the day, you're already doing the important part.

How I'd Adjust This Recipe for Cutting, Maintenance or Bulking

You don't need separate "cutting food" and "bulking food."

Most of the time, you can simply adjust the portions.

If You're Cutting

  • Use 3 ladyfingers
  • Choose a high-protein, lower-fat Greek yoghurt
  • Use a smaller drizzle of honey
  • Keep the espresso
  • Finish with a light cocoa dusting

You keep the flavour while bringing the total calories down.

If You're Maintaining

Make the standard version.

Four ladyfingers, yoghurt, coffee and enough honey to make it taste good.

Simple.

If You're Bulking

Increase the portion rather than reinventing the recipe.

  • Use 4–5 ladyfingers
  • Increase the Greek yoghurt serving
  • Add a little more honey if needed
  • Add unflavoured collagen protein if you want more protein
  • Add fruit or another carbohydrate source on the side

If you're unsure which approach suits your current goal, our Bulking, Cutting & Maintenance Guide explains the basics.

The Italian Pre-Workout Connection

This part wasn't planned when I started making the recipe, but it fits Savage almost too well.

Coffee has become a bit of a running theme around here.

Our Italian Pre Workout Tee was built around one of the simplest pre-workout rituals there is:

Coffee.

Not a neon drink with a 14-ingredient proprietary blend.

Just Italian pre-workout.

So consider this the food version.

Make the tiramisu. Pull an espresso. Put on the Moka Tee. Then go train.

Very scientific.

Coffee Tiramisu vs Rice Cake Tiramisu

If you've been through the Savage recipe section before, you might have seen our Healthy High Protein Rice Cake Tiramisu.

They're similar ideas, but they're not the same recipe.

The rice cake version is designed around a lighter macro-friendly dessert using rice cakes and protein powder.

This version is closer to the traditional tiramisu experience because we're using actual ladyfingers.

If you're craving something sweet, try both and decide which camp you're in.

Easy Coffee Tiramisu Variations

Chocolate Coffee Tiramisu

Add a little extra cocoa powder between the layers for a stronger chocolate hit.

Higher-Protein Tiramisu

Mix unflavoured collagen protein through the Greek yoghurt.

Sweeter Tiramisu

Add a little more honey or drizzle some over the top before serving.

Berry Coffee Tiramisu

Add a few raspberries or strawberries between the layers.

Not traditionally Italian, but we're already putting Greek yoghurt in tiramisu. The ship has sailed.

Overnight Coffee Tiramisu

Build it the night before and leave it covered in the fridge.

You'll get much softer ladyfingers and a more traditional chilled-dessert texture.

Frequently Asked Questions About High Protein Coffee Tiramisu

Is Tiramisu High in Protein?

Traditional tiramisu isn't usually considered a high-protein dessert. This version uses Greek yoghurt instead of a traditional mascarpone-heavy filling, which increases the protein content. Using a high-protein Greek yoghurt or adding unflavoured protein can increase it further.

Can I Use Normal Greek Yoghurt?

Absolutely. The protein content may be lower than a specifically marketed high-protein yoghurt, but the recipe still works.

Can I Use Instant Coffee for Tiramisu?

Yes. Make it reasonably strong and let it cool before dipping the ladyfingers. Espresso gives you a stronger coffee hit, but you don't need an espresso machine to make this recipe.

Can I Make This Tiramisu the Night Before?

Yes. If you prefer softer ladyfingers, you might actually prefer it after it's been refrigerated overnight. Keep it covered and refrigerated.

Is This Better Before or After a Workout?

Neither is automatically better. I use it for both.

Before training, it gives you carbohydrates and some protein without being a huge meal. After training, it can contribute carbohydrates and protein as part of your overall recovery nutrition.

Your total daily calorie and protein intake remains more important than trying to perfectly time one snack.

Can I Make It Without Honey?

Yes. Leave it out completely or use whatever sweetener you prefer.

Taste the yoghurt first. Depending on the brand, you might decide you don't need anything.

Can I Add Protein Powder to Tiramisu?

Yes. Unflavoured protein works particularly well because it doesn't overpower the coffee flavour. Mix it thoroughly into the Greek yoghurt before assembling the dessert.

Final Thoughts

That's it.

Four main ingredients. Five minutes. Coffee. Tiramisu.

It's easy enough to make around training, tastes like an actual dessert and can be adjusted depending on whether you're cutting, maintaining or trying to push calories higher.

And it's a pretty good excuse to call dessert your Italian pre-workout.
